Russia and China block UN resolution on Syria amidst fears it could mean another Libya-style intervention

Today Russia and China vetoed a United Nations resolution that could have opened the door to sanctions and/or military intervention in the spirit of Libya.

Unsurprisingly, the United States expressed serious disappointment with those who abstained and vetoed.

The U.S. was a major proponent of the Libyan intervention and has flown the majority of combat flights and provided the majority of firepower for the regime change in Libya that has yet to be a total success.

The resolution was blocked with a total of nine votes in favor, two votes against (Russia and China) and four abstentions.

The Russian envoy to the United Nations summed up the reason why Russia voted against the resolution in saying that it was “a philosophy of confrontation”.

The ambassador for China, Li Bandong, said China voted against the resolution because, “sanctions, or threat of sanctions, do not help the situation in Syria but rather complicate the situation.”

Susan Rice, the American ambassador, said that the “council has utterly failed to address an urgent moral challenge and a growing threat to regional peace and security.”

Rice is likely also frustrated because the United States has spent millions supporting the opposition in a bid to oust Bashar al-Assad without any signs of progress, in some cases even attempting to smuggle arms into Syria.

In a typically deceptive fashion, Rice sidelines the U.S.’s meddling in Syria (which has been going on no less than five years) by making it seem as if this is about a humanitarian crisis.

Thankfully, the American government and the United Nations have both proven themselves to be wholly unconcerned with actual humanitarian crises and instead are solely interested in military intervention and the dropping of bombs.

It doesn’t hurt to steal some precious natural resources and other assets while establishing a private central bank to further rape the nation they helped “save,” which is exactly what is going on in Libya.

Rice said, “Today, two members have vetoed a vastly watered-down text that doesn’t even mention sanctions.”

She continued, “Those who oppose this resolution and give cover to a brutal regime will have to answer to the Syrian people – and indeed to people across the region.”

This is the classic “you’re either with us or you’re with the terrorist” rhetoric which divides the nations of the world in order to pressure those who realize what is really going on into succumbing to Western interests.

Russia and China are not giving cover to Assad and helping oppress the Syrian people, indeed they are likely doing the Syrian people a favor by blocking a resolution which would be used to bomb them into the Stone Age, just like Libya.

As Russia’s deputy foreign minister Gennady Gatilov pointed out on Tuesday, the current resolution clearly opens the door for sanctions and most importantly did not even call on the Assad regime to begin talks with the opposition, according to the Interfax news agency.

Before this resolution was tabled, Russia had repeatedly made it clear that they would not vote for any resolution that left the door open for sanctions, and while Britain France, Germany and Portugal removed the word “sanctions” from the draft, the possibility of sanctions was clearly embedded.

The deputy director at the Beijing Center for International Monetary Research, Xiang Songzuo, told Russia Today that the Chinese and Russian vetoes were not only very important and the correct decision, but will also be beneficial to the peaceful resolution of the Syrian conflict.

He says that, “Only by peaceful dialogue can we bring stability and peace in Syria and other countries,” and that history shows us sanctions are not the most effective way to settle domestic conflicts, as Libya has proven.

He insists that despite the Russian and Chinese vetoes, there is the real possibility of the United States taking unilateral action against Syria.

This is evidenced not only by the covert support for the Syrian opposition and the erection of propaganda networks pumping American lies and deception into the nation via satellite, but also by the U.S.’s (and Canada’s) independently imposed sanctions already in place.

Unfortunately for the people of Syria, the United Nations hasn’t stopped America before in the case of the invasion of Iraq so if the U.S. sets its sights on removing Assad completely, we can expect it to happen one way or another.
