DHS agencies to buy up to 7,000 new 5.56x45mm NATO “personal defense weapons”

5.56x45mm NATO rounds

The behemoth Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is seeking up to 7,000 select fire (meaning that they are capable of both semi-automatic and automatic fire) 5.56x45mm North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) personal defense weapons (PDWs) on top of the hundreds of millions of hollow point rounds they recently acquired.

Unfortunately, the reason for both of these major purchases and the continuing heavy armament of DHS agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continues to go unexplained.

The newest weapons order – which was originally posted on June 7, 2012 and has a response date of July 9, 2012 – is for so-called personal defense weapons which would be used in close quarters combat situations when maximum concealment is required.

I find that last part quite interesting, as requiring maximum concealment for a 5.56x45mm NATO weapon is not really a run of the mill request.

Each prospective vendor has been asked to provide to the DHS their weapons, which will be tested at the National Firearms and Tactical Training Unit (NFTTU) in Altoona, Pennsylvania, which is run by ICE.

The DHS solicitation (PDF) says that each vendor is to provide, “Only one specific nomenclature firearm … for solicitation testing [to be] considered for contract award.”

It is also interesting that the solicitation specifically states that, “The awardee or awardees of the subject contract agrees to allow DHS to release testing data of their firearm samples to Federal agencies, Military, and law enforcement.”

The solicitation also specifies that the guns will be quite small for a rifle at a mere 30 inches or less with the stock fully extended and 20 inches or less with the stock fully retracted or folded.

They also specify that the barrel must come equipped with a flash suppressor and/or muzzle brake, noting, “The muzzle device will be rated on its ability to reduce muzzle signature.”

Furthermore, they state that every firearm will be tested with a whopping 4,000 rounds, meaning that 28,000,ooo rounds will be spent just testing the firearms before they are put into service.

If the guns pass that test, three samples will be tested with an additional 3,500 rounds per firearm while the guns will also be tested for resilience in high temperature, low temperature, salt water immersion, sand and dust and drop conditions.

At the time of writing the contractors who have expressed interest are Ohio-based Ares, Inc., Florida-based Material Integration, Inc., and Virginia-based FNH USA, LLC.

Unfortunately, the information we have on the actual reason behind these large procurements is non-existent.

If we can take the DHS’s history with the refusal to explain the reason why they need hundreds of millions of hollow point bullets, it is safe to say that they will likely thwart any attempt to get them to explain why they need these thousands of firearms as well.

Personally, I find this quite sickening in a time when our national debt – against which the American taxpayer is being used as collateral – is rising to unimaginable heights.

With the levels of debt we have right now and no cutbacks in government spending in sight, I seriously doubt that we will ever realistically be able to pay back these ludicrously massive sums of money.

Yet the government continues to spend like there’s no tomorrow between hundreds of millions of rounds of ammunition, thousands of new weapons and even hundreds of millions on drones we don’t even use because they don’t work (see below).

This is preparation for the impending war on the American people. The war on terror isn’t on some muslim terrorists, it’s on US!

    Your math is wrong on the ammo. 7,000 X 4,000 = 28,000,000.

    …Just saying.

Also the contract is for 7000 guns.
Only the test guns – one per vendor – are going to be endurance tested to see if they melt.
So they are only going to burn through 25000 to 100000 rounds depending of how many vendors compete.
        (Right now 3 X 4000 + 3 X 3500 = 22,500 rounds

But they need these guns to protect themselves from the thousands ATF let walk south of the border and then lost track of.

Let’s see: electronic voting fraud that got us an unelected buffoon (Bush) who acted as the 9/11 gatekeeper, took us off to illegal wars against Israel’s enemies, shredded the constitution based on the 9/11 lie and the Muslims boogieman; creating the DHS police state edifice.

Bush, worked with Alan Greenspan and Wall Street, kept interest rates artificially low, loosen under-writing standards, repealed the Glass Steagal Act, and left OTC derivatives unregulated; acts which lead to the largest economic (housing) bubble in history, destroying investments world-wide, leading to the financial bail-out of the very same perpetrators of this same scam, the public insurance mechanism, Leaving US taxpayers on the hook for trillions of dollars, imposing austerity on the very people ripped off by this ponzi scheme. Millions impoverished, jobless, homeless.

Our jobs are being off-shored to China, who buys the Treasury bills that fund the budget deficit that burgeoned astronomically due to military expenditures meant to fight…China and its expansion into Africa; and “al Qaeda” the CIA contrivance meant to distract us while we are enslaved and our pockets picked.

Meanwhile, because in the aftermath of 9/11 Cheney acts to deregulate deep water drilling, we get the Gulf of Mexico oil blow-out, an environmental, health, and economic disaster that is only dwarfed by the HAARP/Stuxnet Fukushima Daiichi radiation nightmare that now threatens the existence of all human beings in the northern hemisphere.

So, what do these miscreants do? Do they act to arrest those responsible for these massive crimes against humanity? Do they allow for a process to free the electoral system, the MSM so people can restore democracy to their countries? Allow for an unfettered investigation into what really happened on 9/11? Do they punish BP for destroying the ecology and economy of the Gulf; demand the MSM to tell the people about the real dangers of Fukushima, and move heaven and earth to allow for the badly needed repairs to Fukushima reactor #4?

No, they buy 700 million rounds of ammunition, thousands of NATO rifles, and get ready to slaughter their own citizens, and march the survivors off to FEMA camps!

I think they do this just to raise the price of bullets so we don’t buy as much. It’s time to look into reloading.

No surprise here, did you actually think DHS was going to THROW the bullets at you from their bulletproof checkpoints? I’m looking for the article I read a while back, I believe the DHS was also ordering grenades for WHATEVER reason.

Is DHS considered law enforcement? They sound like they’re outfitting a military brigade. I think an audit of DHS is merited here to see exactly how many toys these criminals are acquiring.

The government is arming themselves with hollow-point rounds, PDW’s and drones yet the average law abiding citizen who is registered to own firearms and ammunition are a supposed “threat” to the US and face losing their second amendment??

The government is also arming the Mexican Cartels through Operation Fast & Furious. When you start to see the complete picture on a grand scale .. well.. it’s hard not to be pissed off or depressed.

Law abiding citizens are not the problem; Criminals with illegal firearms are the problem.. and now that problem has grown to the DHS having more bullets than they know what to do with.

I noticed that when DHS buys M-16/AR-15s (but full-auto) the media names them “Personal Defense Weapons” — but when we the law abiding public buy the same rifle in semi-auto config, its called (by the media) an “Assault Weapon”… Typically “its good for us (the government) but not for them (“They the People”). Sort of like calling Wayne LaPierre of the NRA a “gun loon” because he suggested having armed guards in our public schools… howbeit Obama and the rest send their children to a school that is guarded by NINE armed security guards, AND the secret service. Saying to us (in effect) “armed security guards are good for us, but not for them (the people)”… double standards…
