CIA Director Petraeus Resigns

November 09, 2012

The director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) David Petraeus has resigned from his post.

In a statement on November 9, Petraeus admitted to having an extramarital affair, which he said made him unfit to continue as America’s intelligence chief.

Petraeus, who has been married for 37 years, said he had shown “extremely poor judgment.”

In accepting Petraeus’s resignation, President Barack Obama praised him for his “extraordinary service to the United States.”

“As Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, he has [served] with characteristic intellectual rigor, dedication, and patriotism,” Obama said.

“By any measure, through his lifetime of service David Petraeus has made our country safer and stronger.”

Obama also said his “thoughts and prayers” were with Petraeus and his wife. Holly and that he wished them “the very best at this difficult time.”

Obama stated that he had the “utmost confidence” in Michael Morell, who was named acting CIA director.

Petraeus, a former commander of U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, took over as CIA chief in 2011.
