Dan Savage, an author, pundit and columnist, promoted population control on Australian television on Monday, even saying that “abortion should be mandatory for about 30 years.”

The United Nations, among other entities, have debated population control in the past, though most proponents usually fall short of calling for mandatory abortion.

After all, forced abortion was denounced as a crime against humanity at the Nuremberg Trials and the infamous Ohio kidnapper Ariel Castro was charged with aggravated murder for the “unlawful termination of a pregnancy,” also known as a forced abortion.

At least under Ohio law, to carry out Savage’s idea would mean widespread aggravated murder.

Savage’s statement, which has drawn a considerable amount of criticism, can be seen in the below video:

The entirety of Savage’s claim is based on the false premise that there are “too many god—- people on the planet.”

Even Salon – far from a conservative publication – has noted that “the population bomb as we’ve conceived it before really isn’t there.”

For that matter, even the United Nations has expressed concerns about declining and aging populations in the past and in their latest world population prospects shows that population growth is expected to slow down quite rapidly in the future.

Yet savage still has no problem with saying, “I think abortion should be mandatory for about 30 years.”

His answer came in response to a questioner asking, “Which so-called dangerous idea do you each think would have the greatest potential to change the world for the better if it were implemented?”

So while Savage recognizes that the idea might be considered “dangerous” by some, he believes it would indeed change the world for the better.

Savage is not alone. Indeed, some in the academic world have called for “zero population growth in the lifetime of our children.”
